Our Curriculum

A new National Curriculum was introduced in England from September 2014 which has been taught to all year groups since September 2015. The new curriculum is intended to be more challenging, focussing on essential core subject knowledge and skills such as essay writing and computer programming.

Below is a summary of the main changes in the core subjects.  If you have any questions regarding the curriculum please contact our Headteacher, Mr Richard Borman.





Data handling is not included in Y1

There is no use of calculators except near the end of KS2

·         Yearly objectives

·         Larger numbers earlier

·         Tables to 12 x 12 by end of Y4

·         Earlier introduction of formal written methods and standard units of measurement

·         Focus on fractions

·         Roman numerals

·         Binary in Y6


Less of a focus on genre and more focus on quality writing

·         Year-by-year objectives for Y1 and Y2, then Lower KS2 and Upper KS2

·         Required spelling and grammar objectives and wordlists

·         Priority for phonics in both key stages

·         Focus on reading for pleasure

·         Reciting Poetry


There is less content at KS1: Medicines, Sound, Electricity and Magnetism all shift to KS2 programmes of study

·         Yearly objectives

·         Continued emphasis on working scientifically at each key stage

·         Evolution introduced in Year 6


The name ICT has gone and been replaced with computing.

·         Largely based around writing algorithms to control elements

·         eSafety mentioned at every key stage

Design & Technology

Refreshed emphasis on cookery

·         Design, Make and Evaluate at each Key Stage

·         Technical knowledge defined

·         Healthy cooking to be covered at every Key Stage


No significant changes

·         A single page curriculum for KS1-2 combined:

·         Use a range of materials, including sketchbooks in KS2

·         Develop techniques

·         Learn about the great artists


No significant changes

·         A single page curriculum for KS1-2, largely focused on singing and playing instruments

·         Use of staff and other forms of notation in KS2

·         Develop an understanding of history of music at KS2


No significant changes

·         A focus on competitive games

·         KS2 Swimming "perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations"

Foreign Languages

Less focus on inter-cultural understanding: called 'Foreign Language' at KS2 ('Modern Foreign Language' introduced at KS3)

·         Teaching should focus on making 'significant progress' in one language

·         Balance of spoken and written language

·         Focus on practical communication

·         Basic understanding of grammar

·         Focus on developing accurate pronunciation


There is now less choice about what to study and when in the programme of study

·          KS1: Changes within living memory; events beyond living memory and lives of significant individuals; significant local history

·         KS2 : Chronological progression through history of Britain from early Britons to Edward the Confessor

·         A local study and a study of an aspect or theme that extends knowledge beyond 1066


No explicit mention of environmental sustainability; No African, Asian or Australasian geography

·          Factual knowledge, e.g. continents and oceans at KS1

·         UK focus at KS1, plus one non-European comparison

·         Europe (including Russia) and the Americas covered in KS2

At All Cannings School we have used this to create a broad and relevant curriculum, taking into account the unique organisation and location of our school and the needs and interests of our learners and their families.

How the curriculum is organised at All Cannings

Using Chris Quigley's 'Essentials' to deliver the National Curriculum, we still have a challenge at our school due to the mixed aged classes and the potential for different class structures from year to year - for instance in 2014-15 we have a pure Year 6 class for the first time.

To ensure that the correct coverage takes place as pupils pass through Key Stage 1 and then Key Stage 2, we use a TD day towards the end of the Summer Term to plan the content for the following year.  This is based upon what has been taught in previous years as well as any local, cluster or national events as well as any whole-school topics.  Each class in Key Stage 1 and each class in Key Stage 2 will teach the same broad content at a depth that is appropriate for the children in their class.  This method ensures that all children cover all the areas that they need to in primary school whilst still giving our creative staff the most opportunities to bring their own strengths and ideas to class as well as incorporating the children's own thoughts and questions.
