Computing - Statement of Curriculum Intent

At All Cannings, our ambition is that all children are computing technologists. We aim to equip all pupils with the life-skills that will enable them to embrace and utilise new technology in a socially responsible and safe way. We prepare our children for the ever-changing world of modern technology through splitting our computing learning into 4 key areas - Computer Science, Information Technology, Digital Literacy and E-Safety.  

Through this curriculum coverage, children leave us in Year 6 as competent and safe users of ICT with an understanding of how technology works. They will have developed skills to express themselves and be creative in the way they use digital media. We achieve this by providing a rich diverse curriculum, underpinned by our School’s Christian values of Wisdom, Generosity, Koinonia, Compassion, Peace and Joy and lined by our ‘Golden threads’. This enables every member of the school community to recognise and show that learning makes a difference.

Implementation 

We have created a comprehensive progression document for staff to follow to best embed and cover every element of the computing curriculum. The knowledge/skills statements build year on year to challenge our learners and deepen their understanding. 

 By following the scheme of Teach Computing and our own All Cannings E-Safety curriculum, teaching and learning will facilitate progression across all key stages within the strands of digital literacy, information technology and computer science. Our E-Safety scheme has been adapted from various, recommended sources including Smartie the Penguin, Digiduck, HTML Heroes and UP2US.  Our Computer Science curriculum, focusing on coding and algorithms, currently uses resources such as Scratch, Kodable  and Beebots. The children will have access to resources which aid in the acquisition of skills and knowledge which includes the hardware (computers, iPads and programmable equipment) and software that they need to develop knowledge and skills of digital systems and their applications. 

Through our ‘Digital Leaders’ program (TBC January 2022), children will be empowered to educate their peers about online safety and develop their own understanding of how to use the internet safely and effectively.

 Impact

Through this curriculum coverage, children leave us in Year 6 as competent and safe users of ICT, with an understanding of how technology works. They will have developed skills to express themselves and be creative in the way they use digital media. 

Children will be able to: 

  • Understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science including logic, algorithms and data representation.  
  • Analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems. 
  • Evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies.
  • When using the internet, know how to use it responsibly and effectively and develop a deep knowledge and understanding of online safety.
